10周年の記念に、新しいブレンドを作ろうと思い立ち、まずは名前を考えました。10周年のW&Hを象徴する言葉は何だろうか？W&Hを始める時、私は文章にこう綴りました。
「夫と妻で始めるこの店を、WIFE&HUSBANDと名付けました。」
そう、店名通り、初めは私たち２人だけでした。でも、10年経った今のW&Hを見つめると、コーヒーの種類も形も沢山増え、お店もRoastery DAUGHTER / Gallery SONが加わり、そして一緒にお店に立ってくれるスタッフが大勢います。私と妻の２人だけと思っていたら、いつしか大家族のように賑やかになっていました。今のW&Hを表現し、そしていつも支えてくれるスタッフ達への感謝の気持ちも込めて、10周年記念のブレンドを「FAMILY」と名付けました。

名前が決まれば、次はブレンドの中身です。「FAMILY」な味わいには、何をブレンドすれば良いだろうか？あれこれ思案していると、妻が笑いながらこう言いました。
「FAMILYだから、DAUGHTERとSONとMOTHERとFATHERを混ぜたら？」
すでにブレンドした豆を、さらにブレンドの材料にするなんて聞いたことがありません。私も笑いながら、試しに10年の経験を頼りにブレンドし淹れてみると、これがとても美味しい！W&Hの目指す透明感のある深煎りの最終到達点にも思えるコーヒーが出来上がりました。

「FAMILY」には特筆すべき点がいくつもあります。ブレンドをさらにブレンドするということで、元になるそれぞれのブレンドに使っている豆を紐解くと、実に8種類の豆を使用しています。もし一からブレンドを組み立てようとすると、多くても使うのは4種類程度でしょう。それ以上はそれぞれの豆の意味付けが難しいと思います。また、深煎りにFATHERの少量の浅煎りをブレンドすることによって、深煎りだけでは生み出せないすっきりした透明感を持っています。そして、デカフェのMOTHERをブレンドすることによって、ほんの気持ちカフェインが抑えめになっています。それぞれの元のブレンドは10年掛けて、一種類ずつ生み出して来たものです。その豆達がさらにブレンドされているということは、10年の歩み無しでは決して辿り付かなかったに違いありません。

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we decided to create a brand new blend. The first step was choosing a name.
What word would best symbolize 10 years of W&H?
When we first started WIFE & HUSBAND, I wrote these words:
“We decided to start a coffee shop together and named it “WIFE&HUSBAND”
Back then, it really was just the two of us.
But when we look at W&H today, 10 years later, we see how much has grown—so many new coffees and offerings, the addition of Roastery DAUGHTER and Gallery SON, and above all, a team of staff who now stand beside us.
What began as a partnership between two people has quietly become something much bigger, like a lively, extended family.
To reflect what W&H has become today—and to express our deep gratitude to the staff who support us—we’ve named this 10th anniversary blend “FAMILY.”
Once the name was chosen, we had to decide what flavors should represent this “FAMILY.”
As I puzzled over the possibilities, my wife smiled and said:
“Since it’s FAMILY, why not blend DAUGHTER, SON, MOTHER, and FATHER?”
It sounded almost ridiculous. I had never heard of creating a new blend by blending already-existing blends. But we laughed and decided to give it a try.
Drawing on ten years of roasting experience, I combined them—and the result was truly delicious.
In fact, it felt like we had reached the final form of W&H’s vision: a clear and elegant dark roast with depth and transparency.
There are many unique features to this “FAMILY” blend.
Because it’s made by blending blends, the individual coffees used in the original blends total eight different types of beans.
Normally, a blend might use at most 3 or 4 different beans—more than that, and it becomes difficult to maintain purpose and clarity in flavor.
But here, each component has meaning.
The small amount of lightly roasted FATHER adds a brightness and clarity you can’t achieve with dark roast alone.
And by including the decaf MOTHER, we’ve gently reduced the caffeine content.
Each of the original blends was developed one by one over the past 10 years.
So this “FAMILY” blend could only have been born from that journey.
